Cecil Krarup Andersen, an associate professor in paintings conservation at The Royal Danish Academy, Architecture, Design and Conservation, presents on the mechanical behavior of wax-resin lined paintings. Cecil investigated this subject throughout her PhD research (received in 2013), which focuses on a series of paintings from the Danish Golden Age. Since then she has regularly published on the topic. In the lecture for the masterclass, Cecil explains how changes in temperature and relative humidity can affect the mechanical and structural properties of wax-resin lined paintings. The research investigated the effects of factors such as type of canvas, age of the wax-resin adhesive and stretcher behavior. She also describes resulting degradation phenomena observed in lined paintings.
