Dr. Norbert E. Middelkoop is the senior Curator of Paintings (since 1997), Prints and Drawings at the Amsterdam Historical Museum, now the Amsterdam Museum. During his career, he has published on collection-related issues, such as the city’s collection catalogue of paintings up until 1800, as well as articles on portraiture and city views.

Middelkoop also curated a number of exhibitions, among which Portrait Gallery of the Golden Age in the Hermitage Amsterdam, a large permanent presentation focusing on the Amsterdam group portraits and Dutch civic culture, which opened in 2014. In 2017-18 he compiled the double exhibition Ferdinand Bol and Govert Flinck, Rembrandt’s Master Pupils, a joint project of the Amsterdam Museum and the Rembrandt House Museum.

Middelkoop has lectured intensively on Amsterdam-related issues, notably on portraiture and city views, in museums and/or universities worldwide.

On November 1st 2019 Middelkoop successfully defended his PhD dissertation on the Amsterdam corporate group portraits. Recently, he has been the guest curator of the exhibition Rembrandt and Amsterdam portraiture 1590-1670, held this Spring and Summer at the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid.
